Melbourne Airport – Integrated Vegetation Management Program (Ongoing)

The IVM Group is working in partnership with Melbourne Airport to deliver a long-term Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) Program that supports airside safety, operational efficiency, and sustainable vegetation management.

The collaboration began with an initial trial targeting a reduction in mowing frequency and bird-attracting vegetation. Early results demonstrated strong control of broadleaf weeds known to attract birds and laid the foundation for a broader IVM strategy.

Building on these outcomes, The IVM Group has continued to work with Melbourne Airport to develop and implement tailored IVM strategies across key airside areas. The program targets high-risk zones surrounding both runways and is being progressively expanded and refined in collaboration with airport stakeholders.

Key objectives and benefits include:

  • Reduced bird activity in grassed airside zones
  • Strategic removal of vegetation that provides food sources for wildlife
  • Decreased mowing frequency and associated maintenance costs
  • Reduction of post-mowing debris (FOD), improving runway safety
  • Transition of high-risk vegetation to less attractive and more manageable species

This ongoing program reflects Melbourne Airport’s proactive approach to risk management and its commitment to safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible airside operations.
