Darwin International Airport (DIA) – International Vegetation Management (IVM) Program 2020 – Ongoing
Since 2020, The IVM Group has partnered with Darwin International Airport (DIA), Department of Defence and Ventia to implement a tailored Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) Program, building on the success of a FY2019 trial and a comprehensive vegetation survey of high-risk airside areas.
This science-based program targets priority zones across the airfield, with the primary goal of reducing wildlife hazards – particularly the risk of bird strikes – by modifying habitat conditions and eliminating key food sources in high-risk zones.
Key outcomes achieved to date include:
-
- A significant reduction in the availability of food sources for birds, including broadleaf weeds and grasshoppers, particularly in areas surrounding the main runway.
- The promotion of low-growing, desirable turf species that naturally reduce the attractiveness of habitat for hazardous wildlife.
- Enhanced turf management practices that have lowered both the frequency and intensity of mowing, contributing to a reduction in foreign object debris (FOD) risks.
The IVM Group continues to work closely with the DIA, Defence and Ventia team to monitor outcomes and refine program strategies, ensuring ongoing effectiveness in wildlife risk mitigation and vegetation compliance.
